When we started in 2007, carbon footprints were new to business and carbon offsetting was the conscience-saving tool of choice. Carbon neutrality without much action to reduce emissions was the order of the day. But we didn’t want to be neutral about carbon; we wanted to be smart, and thus Carbon Smart was founded – helping business take clear, practical action on climate change.
Then 2008 happened. The world economy teetered, and the private sector lost interest in sustainability as survival become the priority for many. Over the following five years we learned that even in survival mode if we understood a business well, we could make sustainability work – we needed to focus on the end benefit, the specific challenges that each business faces and effective engagement with management teams.
We needed to leave behind a one size fits all mindset.
As we did, the breadth of support we needed to offer and the range of businesses we worked with expanded. It was no longer just about carbon.
Right from energy, plastic, waste, modern slavery, supply chains to climate change and strategy, we are now helping businesses with every aspect of sustainability. And now, as we enter what many are calling the climate decade, we know that every business must be sustainable.
While we are very proud of what we have achieved as Carbon Smart over the last thirteen years, in 2020 we are starting a new chapter as Avieco.
Inspired by the French word for life, “la vie”, and the ecosystem we all depend on, this new name and brand gives us the breadth to reflect all our work and our huge ambition for a sustainable future.
