Reducing global CO2 emissions in line with internationally agreed targets will require transformational changes in almost every aspect of our lives. For many sectors, the ability to achieve the requisite emissions reductions will depend fundamentally on the adoption of ICT-enabled solutions. From smart grids and smart meters; buildings energy management systems and shared data centres, to reducing transportations emissions through remote working and autonomous vehicles; in every case, the widespread adoption of ICT-enabled solutions will place ever-increasing demands on our already stretched communications networks. Global IP traffic has already grown from a 100 GB per day in the early nineties, to trillions of gigabytes every year. With over 2 billion Facebook users sharing content from every corner of the world, the growth in our appetite for data is staggering. The communications and technology sector has a unique role to play in the climate decade.
Not just enablers
Technology companies will be scrutinised like no other sector. Whether providers of the gadgets that support our lives or the online services that we hardly ever leave, technology companies will be fundamental enablers of the low-carbon, sustainable economy.. They must be at the forefront of sustainable business practice themselves. The starting gun has already fired.
Apple is run on 100% renewable energy and introducing recycled materials to many of its products, Google has 100% renewable supplied data centres and with our help is focused on operating zero waste, truly circular facilities. Microsoft have recently declared technology built without principles more harm than good. Whilst the giants have got going, the sectors they lead must now step up – watching them do it is simply not an option.
