The UK Government introduced SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) to accelerate the sustainability agenda for more than 10,000 captured businesses. Understanding the eligibility criteria and requirements can be complicated for businesses, even those that have reported their environmental performance previously.
The new regulation came into effect in April 2019, mandating quoted and large unquoted businesses to report:
Reporting must be public, and included in annual report and accounts or equivalent disclosures for reporting years starting on or after 1st April 2019.
Organisations captured by the regulation in the UK include:
It should be noted that charities, academies and companies owned by Universities or NHS Trusts may also be captured by the regulation.
Drive change in your organisation
SECR is here to stay. If eligible, your organisation needs to comply ever year. Thorough understanding of your organisations’ environmental performance and ability to show progress year on year will be the bare minimum.
Top performers will go beyond compliance and produce more extensive sustainability reporting, explore and engage their supply chain on sustainability matters and showcase innovative approaches to improving sustainability performance.
How can we help?
Whether you want to comply with SECR at a minimal level, or be a leader in your field, we can assist you in identifying the reporting frameworks and approaches that work for your business.

I was impressed with the thoroughness and level of detail that our data set was analysed in. Presenting an extensive data set in an easy to use format was of great value in communicating the outcome of the work internally, and prioritising areas of the supply chain for future action.

Dentsu Aegis has worked with Avieco’s experts on various areas, such as carbon footprint reporting and assurance support, and recently also advised us how to switch our global network to renewable electricity. The team’s expertise on environmental sustainability is impressive, and the work delivered is always of highest standard.

Nigel Pink, Group Engineering Manager, Dominos UK & Ireland Ltd
Avieco delivered exactly the workshop we needed to get our sustainability team and regional leads on the same page when it comes to ‘market-based’ reporting. It’s a challenging area to tackle for a global business – particularly when we operate in a number of markets where there is little or no choice in terms of energy purchasing. Avieco has given us the knowledge and tools to ensure we get our disclosures right – they really exceeded my expectations for what we could achieve in one afternoon!
