In the 1970’s Milton Friedman told us that “Businesses' sole purpose is to generate profit for shareholders” and that view has held sway for many decades. But today as investors, customers, employees, NGO’s and regulators look at business through the lens of sustainable development we all know that what a business does and how it does it, really matter. It’s no longer just about the money.
Every business will need to be sustainable
As across the globe we wrestle with the importance of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs, businesses have a central role to play like never before. As world leaders, governments, regulators and consumers drive change, businesses can no longer afford to stand back.
Employees and prospective recruits will expect you to act sustainably, and so will your investors. Returns from sustainable business are already outperforming unsustainable alternatives. The law already requires major organisations to declare the risks they face, the strategies they have adopted and the targets and performance they are working towards - the rules are tightening. Customers will only work with sustainable suppliers, aligned with their purpose and mission.
To meet these expectations, every business will need to be clear on its purpose, its mission and the values it upholds. Every business will show the world that it understands its impact and has a strategy in place to make a positive contribution.
