Life Cycle
Assessments (LCAs)

Understand your products’ environmental impact

As a sustainability lead you are often faced with complex sustainability decisions. For example, you are considering packaging your new product in plastic or glass bottles but unclear about the environmental impact. If your product is harmful to the environment or to customers, you are likely to attract negative attention.

While you want to improve the sustainability of your products and packaging, the decision to implement change is unique to every business and requires holistic overview & analytical rigour.

Conducting a life cycle assessment (LCA) is a great way of identifying the right actions and approach for your business

Make confident decisions with LCAs

LCA is an analytical decision-making tool used to evaluate your environmental impact throughout the life cycle of product, services, processes and supply chain. This means that you will gain transparency of some of the environmental impact associated with scope 3 emissions. Scope 3 emissions such as the purchase of capital goods, use of sold product and end of life treatment of sold products contribute to 40% of business carbon footprint. LCA is a relevant approach to understand the full picture of emissions across your value chain and enable you to set specific targets and solutions. LCA allows you quantify environmental impacts that are beyond carbon emissions such as global warming, water consumption, energy consumption, ozone layer depletion and human health.

You need to carry out an LCA if you are looking to:

  • Quantify the environmental impact of a new product before manufacturing
  • Change suppliers and you wish to compare the environmental benefits
  • Make changes to your product by choosing alternative process, materials or parts
  • Use an eco-label on your product to communicate the environmental impact
  • Set new policy and regulations (e.g. supermarket carrier bags)

Key benefits of conducting an LCA assessment:

  • Identify which stage in the product/service life cycle has the greatest environmental impact
  • Compare the environmental impacts of products before you make a decision
  • Compare different scenarios, this presents a dynamic way of understanding how your environmental impact can change based on different choices in your business
  • Select between commodities and suppliers with the lowest environmental impact
  • Compare your product or service environmental footprint against your competitors
  • Communicate to your customers why you have made changes to products and their environmental benefits

The importance of LCA is increasing as it helps to quantify progress related to various sustainability topics such as Science Based Targets and Sustainable Development Goals. To set environmental targets you must first assess your current environmental impact. LCA takes a business from raw material extraction through to materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use, maintenance and end of life.

Our LCAs are based on ISO 14000 series; 14040:2006, 14044:2006. LCA can also be used to support other environmental certifications like Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), Product Environmental Footprints (PEF) and Eco-labelling. EPDs are third-party verified and publicly available documentation which are registered to show the environmental impact of a product or service. In addition to conducting an LCA we support with your EPD which is used to communicate and demonstrate the performance of your product or service. Many organisations are seeing the value of conducting LCAs as this allows transparency for potential customers and shareholders.

Asses your environmental impact, make informed decisions with LCAs

I was impressed with the thoroughness and level of detail that our data set was analysed in. Presenting an extensive data set in an easy to use format was of great value in communicating the outcome of the work internally, and prioritising areas of the supply chain for future action.

Alan Sweeting, Global Health, Safety and Environment Senior Manager, Allen & Overy LLP

Avieco supported us in collating and organising data to develop a robust risk assessment process. They have been easy to work with, responsive to our requirements and pragmatic in their solutions.

Gijs Voskuilen, Head of Corporate Responsibility, Bunzl

Avieco has been the preferred environmental consultant since the beginning of our journey to become a sustainable company. Dentsu Aegis has worked with Avieco’s experts on various areas, such as carbon footprint reporting and assurance support, and recently also advised us how to switch our global network to renewable electricity. The team’s expertise on environmental sustainability is impressive, and the work delivered is always of highest standard.

Lars Holm, Global Senior Manager CSR, Dentsu Aegis Network

Avieco informatively led us through the processes needed to reduce our carbon footprint. With their clear and concise advice we have been able to effectively reduce our energy and waste levels. Avieco made the complex notion of energy efficiency into a manageable and achievable reality

Nigel Pink, Group Engineering Manager, Dominos UK & Ireland Ltd

Avieco delivered exactly the workshop we needed to get our sustainability team and regional leads on the same page when it comes to ‘market-based’ reporting. It’s a challenging area to tackle for a global business – particularly when we operate in a number of markets where there is little or no choice in terms of energy purchasing. Avieco has given us the knowledge and tools to ensure we get our disclosures right – they really exceeded my expectations for what we could achieve in one afternoon!

We get that change is not easy. But we must be brave, challenge old ways, set new habits, embrace new thinking.
